JORDAN WALKER - STEVENAGE EDUCATIONAL TRUST BRANDING AND VISUAL IDENTITY GUIDELINES

Branding for Stevenage Educational Trust. The whole swoosh thing was a joke, it's so cliché... it's so cliché they used it.

I personally think the branding guidelines look better than anything else to do with the logo. You can download that here.

GREG DURRELL - CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM BRANDING

This is a huge post I realise and i'm sorry.

The reason being, these are 6 of an 86 page booklet stating the brand guidelines, history and construction of the Canadian Olympic Logo designed by Greg Durrell.

The book itself is fantastic, a nearly completely duo tone book with huge red , black and white dominance. Great use of historical imagery that almosts creates a hidden timeline constructed from pictures alone that generates a story in this book.

The branding is simple, effective, you can see, sadly, that there's been restrictions made by the client no doubt. You get an eye for this when something loses its awesome appeal. He has these images of the canadian maple leaf made souly out of lines and then you look at the final branding and it's rather... simple... almost just plain. Nevertheless it is a nice project and his other work is great too.

SHANGHAI 1990 - 2010

Slightly random but I was still massively surprised by this. The above picture is from 20 years ago. That is the amount of development that has happened in Shanghai.

ANGUS HYLAND AND STEVEN BATEMAN - SYMBOL

Bought this and it's rejuvenated my love for Pan-Am and the Swiss Rail symbols. Can't remember how I found out about it either but the book is really good at showing off clean design and explaining the messages behind iconic logos. Great addition to my bookshelf.

WOLFF OLINS - CURRENT REBRAND

So this may just redeem Wilff Olins from his catostrophic Olympic logo (which is actually starting to look good to me, maybe I should stop staring at it and all it's pretty colours). This rebrard really looks nice. They've gone for a tall, thin font which is slightly last year but it still looks great. Olins has also gone for a moving logo which,as it's for a television channel, motion shouldn't be a problem. The poster that have been posted and the logo alternatives all still work really well and 9 times out of 10, completely legible... but hey. If it aint legible, that's good design. Sit there, work it out, read it, recognise it. It works.

NAOMIE ROSS - LETTERPRESS

Seriously good motion designer and videographer. She also did the opening titles for "There will be blood."

JORDAN WALKER - HERTS WIRELESS ALARMS LOGO

Logo I did for Hertford based 'Herts Wireless Alarms' It's probably the first freelance job I've done corporately getting paid proper freelance money an invoices and all that nice stuff. The client was ecstatic with the final logo and i'm glad it turned out so well.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Seriously the cleverist design you'll see. This has been my inspiration for a client logo I've done recently and i'll post soon.

DANIEL FREYTAG - JAPAN 'TSUNAMI APPEAL'

No amount of words can describe how gutted I am that I didn't get this. Note to self. If I think something is going to be big, stick with my gut instinct and get it because it will sell like trench coats in Camden.

The design is so simple yet it still strikes me as modern and new. Love it. Still going to look for one of these. I don't care.

GIVE UP ART - BENGA - DIARY OF AN AFRO WARRIOR

I could sit here raving about how good the cd case was for Magnetic Man's deluxe edition of their debut album but I thought i'd look at one third of that bands own work; Benga. His debut album is of very similar style yet the functionality of the CD mixed with it's grayscale photography and design really makes this stand out. The art direction is beautiful and all round this really looks nice.

EVOLUTION OF "DOCUMENT" ICON SHAPE

Design has a lovely habit of coming full circle. You'll see that a lot 2011 as every designer ever runs out of ideas.

SHIDLAS - SALIAMI POSTMODERN

Great CD packaging for Lithuanian band Shidlas by Lithuanian design agency Mother Eleganza. The CD is vacuum packed and the sticker even resembles an information sticker showing the contents of the package. Very clever.

QR CODES

I'm prophesisng this shit man. This blog isn't just my open bookmark folder anymore. This is the trend setter. This shit should be bookmarked on every damn mac the moment someone installs an adobe product. I say what's going on. I'm not behind any more. i'm level pegging with the innovators. I am the innovator.

QR codes are going to be huge due to smart phones profits soaring so everyone has the ability to read these now. If you cant read these, you don't deserve to. I'm going to start posting QR codes to sneaky shots of my work. Above is no exception.

New thing where I say a font looks good this week. May continue it. May not.

MANUAL - LOOSE LEAF

I head about Manual from a friend. They're a design agency in San Francisco. They've borough out 'Loose Leaf' a nice collection of pictures, design, illustration and work from heaps of designers from around the Bay area. To buy this thing is about £50 and that isn't even including shipping which will probably be ridiculous as well considering it's being shipped from the west coast. I'm seriously tempted by this though. Only 1000 print and I'd imagine that agencies in London have probably ordered theirs already. This thing just seems to be a coffee table filler and probably would be if it wasn't for the fact it includes 3 wall pins to hang up anywhere.

Also, the logo looks tremendously similar to this retro gem...

CENTRE GEORGES POMPIDOU

The Centre Georges Pompidou opened in 1977 and hasn't changed it's logo since then. Why? Because it looks more modern than most of the logos designed this century, that's why. Looking at the images for their advertising and their general art direction, don't you see some similarities to last years design trends? Block colour, narrow lettering? I think I'm going to invest in some French design books as well as some Swiss ones too. I was lucky enough to visit the Pompidou center a few years back when I was too young to appreciate what it was but I still remember the building looking freaking awesome for a block from the 70's.
