JAY-Z - BROOKLYN NETS IDENTITY

The title is serious. Jay-Z apparently designed this. If so I have to give props to the guy.

I posted a while back about Gaspard, one of Justice making a poster for a gig. It seems musicians are delving into the world of design. This is the reverse of what i'm doing. Has to work somewhere along the line.

THE DESIGN SOCIETY - THE DESIGN SOCIETY JOURNAL

The nice guys at The Design Society have sent me over some pictures of the last 5 issues of The Design Society Journal. I've been in contact with them for the past couple of days seeing if I can arrange to get the whole back catalogue so far sent to me in Endland. The publication is only available in Singapore at the moment and have no online store or plans to create one.

They're been super friendly and it should be getting send within a week or 2!

AFTER THE FLOOD - THE TITANIC

Beautifully shown videographic by After the Flood for BBC regarding the disaster of the Titanic.

US - BENGA - WILL NEVER CHANGE

Amazing music video by design company Us. The video uses 960 separate vinyls to create a stop motion wave form on a single bar. The art direction just looks brilliant and simple at the same time.

JORDAN WALKER.CO.UK

Here is my new website for 2012 if you haven't seen it already. Did it about two weeks ago and forgot to mention it here. Sorry about that.

MATTHEW IRVINE BROWN - MUSIC FOR SHUFFLE

Music made with small clips of the same sounding song or same key and then played in shuffle mode n iTunes. It's remarkably simple looking but works well.

I BOUGHT #4

1. 14/41
Mash Creative owned Mark Bloom produced a book showcasing his favorite logos from the past 14 years. The book also includes 5 golden rules about approaching brand design. Really nice book design, lovely monochromatic design.

2. Design Assembly Book
I'm still yet to work this book out, I wasn't a huge follower of Design Assembly and to be honest bought the book on it's format alone. It's being hailed as award winning material and book of the year, really should tuck my nose into this.

3. Spiel Issue #3
I think I heard about this through It's Nice That and it was straight up my alley as an independent publication. The design on the fron echos old retro football shirts.

ABSTRAKT - CORPORATE IDENTITY 2011

Really nice and simple logo design by Abstrakt. Reminds me of V&A's logo and the simplicity in that.

NICOLE MEYER - 10,000 LAKES

I saw this a few months ago, added it to my (virtually redundant) cargocollective feed and forgot about it. Saw it pop up on ffffound and instantly thought, "Christ, it's got big," Nicole Meyer has been redesigning and creating signs for lakes all around America simply stating "Lake logos have a tendency to be, well, fairly ugly."

They're all amazing and she's been doing one a day for... well, quite a while now.

MUESLI - FRAC CENTRE / IDENTITÉ GRAPHIQUE

Really nice duo tone posters from French company Atelier Muesli.

REPRESENT - THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Every day of February, Represent asked a differnt creative/design agency what they look for in an interviewee. Simple things like describing them in three words or even what you shouldn't do in an interview. This sort of thing needs to printed out as a flyer and put at the front of "The Design Graduate Handbook" not that it exists.

The site itse'f has a really nice basic design using of all things Arial Bold (i'm gritting my teeth as a fan of Helvetica but it does actually work bloody well) and the title font Aperçu. Nice bright colours that stick out.

Don't know how long the site will be up for but definitely check it out.

NICHOLAS "FELTRON" FELTON - THE 2010/2011 FELTRON BIENNIAL REPORT

Every year since the amazing 2007 report i've said to myself, "That would be a brilliant piece of design to hold" and every year, I forget. It got so desperate once that after the facebook timeline event which Nicholas Felton helped design, he re-printed his 2010 book with a limited edition blue cover for 500 prints only and handed them out to everyone who atended the keynote. I think it got to about £70 on eBay before I reluctantly retreated from competitive bidding.

This whole month I was comparing the release dates for the previous reports thinking, shouldn't there be one now? Well, I was bloody happy when over facebook this message pops up:

The very minute that came up on my iPhone. I was up, straight out of bed, straight to his bigcartel site and ordered two. I'm seriously so happy I finally got one. It's like when you're 17 and you spend that whole year waiting to be able to drink in a pub or something (even though you drink anyway) but the principle is there. I waited a whole year thinking "Why didn't I buy it, i've missed out, he's so busy with facebook he wont make another" and then it comes.

I BOUGHT #3

1. Type Revolution
Getting this was one of those rare moments I beet all the blogs. I avidly rummage through behance seeing if I can pick up any independant gemts, be they publication, poster or otherwise. This came across on a search for typographic layout. A 16-page boast. What the paper servers as is an advert for the website HypeForType, showcasing their newsest and best fonts. Designed by randomers pretty much (Ryan Atkinson & Stephan de Lange) whose work I've seen on behance before but though nothing of it. It's really nice and reminds me of finding the Toormix Paper randomly, also off behance.

2. Little White Lies Issue 39
I've seen this publication floating around for ages and to tell the truth, firstly I don't know why I didn't get it before, and secondly, what made me subscribe. Slightly contradicting statements but I'll try to explain. I was skeptical to getting the magazine because it was "just another subscription" (to pile on top of my CR sub, It's nice that sub, Wrap sub and more) but then at the end of Jan I decided I may as well get it in fear that i'm missing out on some quality stuff here. If it keeps popping up, it has to be for a valid reason.

3. A Smile In Mind
Finally, this old thing. And do you know what made me get this?
This picture. I thought if they have to nerve to burn a Golden pencil and then just one graphic design related book after it, on the same barbecue. This book has to mean something. The burning pic was to advertise a "Designer's Barbecue" held last July for top end designers. My invite... probably lost in the mail... or burnt.

JORDAN WALKER - LGBTQ GUIDE

Asked to make this in 48 hours. I haven't had to do speed designing since my London days.

This is a booklet produced for LBGTQ Week at North Hertfordshire College explaining about facts, statistics and the history LGB, LGBT and now LGBTQ week.

Click on the picture to view the whole thing.

JORDAN WALKER - BRIDGING THE GAP COMP

This isn't an advert or anything, it's just so I can show my dad that I actually do stuff at work instead of sitting there with my thumb up my arse for eight hours a day.

THE CHURCH OF LONDON - THE GOOD TIMES

Nice newspaper created by design agency The Church of London.

In 7 days they compiled a group of designers, illustrators, writers, editors and more to create a feel-good newspaper to release on Blue Monday (supposedly the most depressing day of the year) containing only good news and articles to make the reader feel better.

I love me a good independent newspaper so I've already ordered mine. Nice custom font work in this book too by a desiner called Angus MacPherson, who works at TCoL.

DOCTOR WHO

Easily still my favorite intro of any series ever made.

Delia Derbyshire made a song that in the most ironic use of the phrase is completely timeless. Considering that the first version of this was made in 1962. The BBC left her in a room with a heap of synthesizers (The BBC Radiophonic Workshop) and said go nuts. This was the result.

To this day, a favorite and I have all the themes (apart from the modern ones) on my iTunes.

I BOUGHT #2

1. It's Nice That Vol. 7
Accidentally subscribed to this twice so my girlfriend will be getting a reoccurring christmas present for the next 4 months. It's always good this publication, just basically pops a months worth of quality posts into paper form, adds a few interviews and a spotlight on some other designers. Really good.

2. Loose Leaf Edition 1
Ok, I got this last month but I don't care. I've been wanting this for ages and they reduced the price a little a bout 6/7 weeks ago so I just couldn't say no. Haven't opened it because I want somewhere to put it first. Had a little fun trying to get a version sent to me that wasn't bent. They sent it out first time and the corner was crumpled so the next time it got sent out, the packaging was covered in "FRAGILE' warning stamps. Makes me feel like they care.

3. Wrap Magazine Issue Three
HUGE Elastic bound paper full of illustration. The paper promoted alternative wrapping paper and gives free samples of paper available to buy from either their website of from freelance illustrators.

4. Grafik 193
Sadly, the last we'll be seeing from Grafik magazine, for now.
I really enjoyed their rejuvenated publication. The new look, branding, art direction everything. It was new design, put onto paper. It's so sad to see it go under again.
Fingers crossed we'll be seeing them again but I wont be holding my breath.

5. Cairo Divided
Saw this on a design blog a while back. The broadsheet-paper design was straight away an attention catcher, i'd started picking up a few free newspapers by now. Speaking of free, this was free as well. Just had to pay for the postage which didn't bother me at all. Definitely worth grabbing.

6 & 7. Loud and Quiet
Free newspaper I picked up from a music store in Letchworth and now I get it every month. It's just a no nonsense publication talking about music with interviews and gig dates yet every page is designed so well. Every month they change the main typeface they use or body text of main colour, it never looks the same twice. It's almost just an excuse to execute modern design.

8. The Stool Pidgeon
I found this publication for the first time in a bar in Brick Lane. Quality independent music newspaper which follows the same renegade design lines as the aforementioned.

A2/SW/HK / GEETIKA ALOK - INDIA

I saw this font a while ago and it's just another piece I can add to the "should of blogged about it" pile. This font was designed by Geetika Alok in collaboration with A2/SW/HK specifically as a bespoke font for Wallpaper magazine to promote their "Reborn in India" issue.

It perfectly melds together traditionalism with modern design. it really caught my eye when I saw it back in May. The only thing that deterred me was the price I think but spending money on a font that only has one purpose, as a headline font. I can't justify it.

That being said, I wouldn't want to tarnish the fact it was designed specifically for a single publication.
